DIY Rustic Bookshelf

Our DIY Guru, Fern restored a shelf to create a beautiful rustic cookbook holder for her kitchen. The shelf was purchased about a year ago at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore (at a steal, only $10!) and has been purposeless until Fern found inspiration to give it a make-over.

First, Fern cut the top off of the shelf to accommodate for a flat top of old fence slats. The unit was painted with linen white and a mustard yellow paint, then stained and wiped off. The fence slats were measured for the top and sides of the unit. They were then sanded down and stained, lightly painted with a red all-purpose paint, then stained again and wiped off. The wood slates were attached with wood glue and nails. The rustic look of the piece is gorgeous, it is perfect for a cook book holder in a kitchen!
